All the cool kids have their names embroidered on their black belts in Japanese...

"...and I want to be one of the cool kids." - GameBoy.

My response- "Me too."

GameBoy was explaining to me why he was photo copying his certificate of accomplishment from his dojo. They needed his name in Japanese to embroider on his black belt, you see.

These are the kind of conversations you get to have when you work at a tech company with software developers.

What?? Shut up!
You know you wish you were one of the cool kids, too.

I'm Lame

I'm up at 1:30 AM watching Stick It, a craptacular movie about gymnastics.
Here are a few things that are sad about this, besides the fact I'm watching this movie at all.

1. This is not the first time I've seen this movie.
That's right. I've seen it before and I decided to watch it again anyway.

2. Two commercial banks ago, the movie some how reset to show the part of the movie that was on two commercial banks before that.
So, not only am I watching the movie again, I've been watching the same scenes from this movie for about the last 45 minutes.

3. Milo went to bed without me.
The husband went to bed around midnight. Milo made it until one, but then I opened the bedroom door and he scampered away to cuddle up with the husband rather than stay up with me. It's sad when your dog abandons you because you've officially stayed up too late.

4. I cannot turn this movie off.
It's not a great movie and I already know what happens. But, for the life of me, I cannot turn it off. I have to see it through to the end.

It's possible I need some form of professional help.

Side note: The gymnastics fan-girl in me totally tweaked out when I saw Nastia Liukin is in this movie. She does a whole bars routine. Hee. Awesome.

Until I saw the movie poster, I didn't know this movie was from the writer of Bring It On. That should give you some hint about how good this movie is.

Fanciness

My optometrist was very concerned that I have not been disinfecting my contact lenses. I would worry, but I haven't disinfected them for the last 13 years, so this is nothing new.
He gave me a new system for my contacts, which hopefully won't cause the raging, stinging, aching, I-want-to-rip-the-eyeballs-out-of-my-head pain I have previously experienced with disinfectants.

This is my new contact lens case. Looks fancy, right?

You pull the middle out and put a lens in the basket on each side.

Then, you fill the vial with hydrogen peroxide, which will disinfect the lenses.
My optometrist must think I'm pretty, because he told me no less than 10 times that I am not to put hydrogen peroxide in my eyes.
Of course, then he mentioned that hydrogen peroxide in the eyes is very painful, which he knows "from experience," so possibly, he's the pretty one.
I had my contacts out for our appointment, so I couldn't really tell.

Then you put the lenses in the hydrogen peroxide for at least 6 hours. During the six hours the metal disk at the bottom of the case reacts with the hydrogen peroxide and turns it into sterile water. So, theoretically, I should be able to take them directly out of the case and pop them into my eye.

Maybe my nerd colors are shining through, because I think that's pretty fucking cool.
Way to go, Science, as long as it works. If not, watch your back. I've got my eye on you.

Dictionary

I caught a little bit of CNN at the gym tonight.
They were talking about Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. I only heard part of it, but they were saying one VP candidate talks too much and the other too little.
One of the pundits said (and this is an approximate quote), "Biden's going to have to refrain from being his normal congenital self."

Hmm... congenital? Really?

According to dictionary.com...
congenital
-adjective
1. of or pertaining to a condition present at birth, whether inherited or caused by the environment, esp. the uterine environment
2. having by nature a specified character

Now, I suppose he could have been referring to the Biden personality, conceived in the womb and then brought forth unto this earth. More likely, he meant to say congenial.

According to dictionary.com...
congenial
-adjective
1. agreeable, suitable, or pleasing in nature or character
2. suited or adapted in spirit, feeling, temper, etc.

D'oh! Don't worry CNN commentator guy. I misspeak all the time and people love to point it out. It's fucking annoying. So, sorry about this I guess, but you were kind of pompous so I don't really feel that bad about it.

Confession: It sounds all grown up to say that I was watching CNN at the gym, but in fact I only saw a couple of seconds while Lincoln Heights, which is what I was actually watching on ABC Family, was on commercial.

Ouch!

Was that my hip or my pride?

Yesterday, I was out walking the big dogs when they suddenly lunged to the side and back of me. This caused me to spin, trip over their leashes and land hard on my left elbow and hip. It was dizzying and terrifying. I don't think I've fallen like that in all my adult life.

I was so fucking pissed at the dogs.

What were they so upset about?
A large, threatening pack of dogs?
A roving band of rabid cats?
Terrorists?

No, an elderly couple walking on THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET!!!

She was nice and asked me if I was okay.
He was kind of dick and laughed at me.
Whatever, grandpa...

I can't hold a grudge against my pups. They were so penitent on the rest of the way home. We passed a dog, kids playing in the street, a guy mowing his lawn and a couple who walked dangerously close to them and there was nary a peep from them. They walked docilely by my side.

This leads me to believe they can behave, they just don't want to.
Understandable. Me either.

Today, my hip hurts. It hasn't turned into a big old black bruise yet, but it will.
So, I have that going for me, which is nice.

Gymnastics Superstars

I got this ad in my email at work today.
I seriously considered going... is that sad?
Here's a recap of my consideration:
Ooooh! Nastia Liukin AND Shawn Johnson!
Maybe they really ARE friends in real life.
Shannon Miller and Blaine Wilson? Holy crap I can't believe those two are still alive, much less still doing gymnastics! Old school!!
Sasha Artemev, he was pretty rockin' on the pommel horse at the Olympics!
Ooooh! Jonathan Horton! I liked him at the Olympics!
Hmm... October 15th, I don't think the husband and I have anything going on then... maybe???

Oh wait, what does that say?
"The thrill and power of gymnastics performed to hits by top Disney artists?"

Um, okay, no.
Never mind.
I'm done.

I don't mind being a nerd. I work for a software company after all. But, in the end, we all have lines we just can't cross. Apparently, stuff set to "hits by top Disney artists" is mine.
The 13-year-old gymnastics fan girl in me is disappointed.
Oh well, I'm sure the husband just breathed a sigh of relief that we will not driving down to Illinois for gymnastics superstars.

Dancing with the Stars

I don't normally watch this show. The husband and I tried once, but we got bored and quit watching it.

However! I was looking over the list of who is going to be on the show for this next season and there are a lot of boring people that I don't care about, but MSN feels I should like Susan Lucci (meh), Toni Braxton (double-meh) and Lance Bass (I repeat, meh). But, then down further I come to find out Rocco DiSpirito is going to be on Dancing with the Stars!!!

I'm a little bit of a Top Chef nerd, so I was kind of excited to see Rocco's going to be on DwtS.

Rocco DiSpirito! Architect of the following zinger, "His gnocchi aren't the only thing that are dense around here... "

Oooh. Burn!

Maybe he's no Anthony Bourdain, but still you can't fault the guy for trying and in truth the dude he was talking about WAS really, really dumb.

So, I'm not sure I can commit to a season of this show, but I might (maybe) tune in to see the cooking all-star take a turn about the floor.

**Disclaimer** I'm never sure how sarcastic these posts are rendered, so I wanted to be clear. Rocco's zinger? Kind of lame. Rocco being on DWTS? Kind of awesome. I really am kind of excited about it.

Old Friends Made New Again

Lately, I've reconnected with a bunch of friends that I've lost contact with over the last decade or so. A lot of them from high school, via Facebook, since our 10 year reunion is coming up in August.
(Which by itself seems crazy to me, I can't believe I've been out of high school 10 years!)
And then also, a friend of mind from college just e-mailed me out of the blue.
It's strange to hear from them again. We're all different, yet kind of the same, too.
That doesn't make sense at all, but it's still kind of true.
And yet, it's awesome at the same time too because a lot of them are really good, fun people.

A/V Goddess

For Christmas when I was 18 I asked my dad for a home theater receiver.
He got me a nice Sony receiver and it has traveled with me where ever I have lived since then.
Alas, as it neared it's 10 year birthday, it finally gave out.
The husband and I were forced to replace her.
Today, I hooked up our new receiver (also Sony) to all of our equipment, and let me tell you that is no small feat as we have a cable box, a TiVO, a tv, a cd player, iPod and DVD.
It's a complicated system and usually it takes me a few times plugging and unplugging cords to get it all right. In the end, I have to hook things up in some stupid insane way to get things to work. Like the cd player has to be hooked up through the TiVO to work correctly.
This time (just this time, I don't hold out hope that this would work again in the future) everything was hooked up correctly the first time. Everything works.
That never happens.
It was awesome.
I am an a/v goddess.
At least for today.
Today is a good day.

ETA: Clearly, I spoke too soon.

Questionable Taste

I think my subconscious has questionable taste in music.
I have had the song "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis stuck in my head for the last few days.
Over and over and over.
And
Over.
A rational person might think that makes sense since they are probably playing that song ad nauseum on the radio now.
However! I don't listen to the radio, I pretty much exclusively listen to my iPod in the car.
I have no idea how the hell that song got there.
But, I officially surrender.
You win brain, so maybe we could listen to something else for a while?
Maybe?
Please!?!
I bought the song on iTunes, so my subconscious can listen to it whenever it wants.
After hearing it about 8 billion times, I have to say it has grown on me.
Which is good, since apparently it's my new favorite song.

I don't care what they say, I'm in love with you
They try to pull me away, but they don't know the truth
My heart's crippled by the vein I keep on closing,
But you cut me open, I keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding...

What?
Shut up.
Don't judge me.

Shopping, Shopping and more Shopping

Sist-A and I went shopping today. I really wanted a chance to go before our trip to Hawaii.
It was a lot of fun. Sist-A is tons of fun to shop with. We like all the same stores and types of clothes. The only time this is a problem is when one of us races towards a new shirt, so we can claim it before the other one does.

This doesn't always work. Like when we shop separately.
We both showed up to shop today in blue jeans, a white cami and green American Eagle "favorite" t-shirts. Granted her cami had lace on it, and mine was a slightly darker shade of green, but still basically the same.
We walked around like twins until I "accidentally" spilled some soup on my shirt at lunch and changed into one of them I bought today.
I would love to pretend I did that on purpose, but I think we all know I'm just a klutz.

Still, it was lots of fun today and I got some cute clothes for Hawaii.

We met up with my step-mom to show at DSW after we were done shopping for clothes and closed down the store. We were checking out after the store "officially" closed. In our defense, they never said anything to us AND we did buy a lot of shoes.
Between us we bought 17 pairs of shoes.
4 for Sist-A.
5 for me.
8 for Fern.
Sounds crazy, right?
Sounds like a lot of shoes?
*Sigh* It was AWESOME!

I got a fantastic new pair of heels and I just love them!
If I weren't already engaged to the mashed potatoes in New Glarus, I would marry them.
I may be a bit capricious, but I'm not that bad!

All in all a pretty good day and now I'm better prepared for the big Hawaiian vacation coming up.
Are you all as psyched about that as I am?
I thought so. :)

I Want a Sandwich

I was listening to a song on the radio on the way home from the grocery story.
The chorus of the song went like this...
"My heart's damaged, damaged, damaged..."

I swear to you the first time I heard it I thought the line after that was:
I want a sandwich, sandwich, sandwich.

It isn't.
It just repeats the first line again.

Hmm... a sandwich.
I do want a sandwich.
I think I'll go have one right now...

Update: Damn! That was a good sandwich!!!!

Shit!/Yay Target

Have you ever had one of those moments where you realize that you almost fucked something up but you managed to save yourself?

I got to work today and realized that some customer meetings that I had inadvertently placed on my calendar for tomorrow, were actually taking place today.

Point #1 in my favor. I realized my mistake.

My work is awesome in that it has a casual dress policy. However, that led me to an additional problem. Since I thought the meetings were tomorrow, I wore jeans to work today. We're supposed to wear business casual to meetings.

Point #1 against me. Wearing jeans to work.

It was 9:30 AM when I realized my mistake. The first meeting was at 11:00 AM. So, since I live 45 minutes away from work, going home to change wasn't an option. However, there is a Super-Target right down the road from my office, so I scooted on down there to see if I could find anything to wear to the meeting.

Luckily I found some pants I like, although they are about 3 inches too long, which precipitated my purchase of safety pins to make them a more appropriate length. Target just doesn't sell petite pants. I considered, for a brief moment, buying a pair of capris which are shorter on regular women and look like my pants just shrunk up a bit on me. But they usually end up being an inch to 1/2 inch too short, so I said nuts to that.

Point #2 for me. I found some pants! Yay!

I had a harder time finding an appropriate shirt. I wore a button up shirt and I'm told we are supposed to tuck those in. I am fundamentally opposed to tucking shirts in... mostly because I look stupid when my shirt is tucked in. So, finally I found a cranberry colored short-sleeved sweater and I ended up getting it. I'm not that thrilled with the sweater I have to tell you. I'm not that thrilled with short-sleeved sweaters in general. (Why? See reason for being fundamentally opposed to the "shirt tuck") It's just okay, but I didn't want to spend all day at Target and I needed to get back to work and changed and over to the customer meeting.

Point #2 against me. A stupid sweater.

I managed to get changed and over to my meeting on time, so no one was the wiser to all the drama that took place beforehand. All in all, with two points for and against me, I'd call the whole thing a wash. And Yay for Target for coming through in a pinch. And a special Yay for Jorge who showed me where the safety pins were, I couldn't have done it without you, man.

A Swing and a Miss

Before I get to the subject of this blog...
Oh my goodness, what a beautiful day!
It was so gorgeous out! It felt wonderful to be outside.
Cash and I went for a long walk this afternoon... and I was wearing a t-shirt. It was awesome!
I love, love, love this weather (finally)!!!

I tried to make sweet-n-sour shrimp tonight and it did not go well.
The smell of the cooking shrimp made me sick to my stomach (and I love shrimp!).
The sweet & sour sauce... just didn't quite taste right.
Jeff actually ate some of it. He said he liked the rice.
I couldn't stomach it. I ate some of the veg and had to quit.
Yuck, yuck, yuck!
We might try to make it again, only with chicken instead of shrimp and a different kind of sauce. The only problem is that shrimp is more calorie economic at 76 cals/serving versus 110 cals/serving for chicken.
Not sure how I'll solve that problem. Maybe less rice, but how much less is the question.
Boo. It makes me sick just to think about it.
Oh well, back to the drawing board on that one.

On a completely unrelated note, I was watching the Simpsons tonight and the Max Power song came on:
Max Power,
He's the man who's name you'd love to touch,
But, you mustn't touch!
His name sounds good in your ear,
But when you say it, you mustn't fear!
'Cause his name can be said by anyone!

Ha! That is the best song ever! I love it when Homer sings that song.
In fact, I love it when Homer sings any song. He sang "Mellow Yellow" in the next episode, which was awesome as well.

Recipe: Pasta Bake

I love pasta. I've always known that knowing how to make a good, low-cal pasta dish would be integral to keeping up this new healthy lifestyle.

Yes, let's just get this out in the open. I refer to this as a lifestyle change, rather than a diet. It's a little (a lot) pretentious, but I think it's an important enough distinction to deal with that. Diets are temporary changes you make, lifestyles are permanent. Diets also smack of the kind of self-hatred a lot of women feel about their bodies, which I find profoundly disturbing, but I think that's a topic for a blog by itself!

I've been watching a lot of Top Chef today, so I feel like I should apologize for not being some great gourmet foodie, but after this I'm done with that. It is what it is, take it or leave it.

Ingredients:
Whole wheat pasta (2 oz/person) - Try Ronzoni Healthy Harvest Penne Rigate, it's 180 cal/serv
Tomato sauce (1/2 c. /person) - I used Contadina sauce with Italian Herbs.
It's 105 calories for a can which is about 1 3/4 c.
Diced tomatoes (1/2 c. /person) - I used Hunts Diced Tomatoes with Balsamic Vinegar, Basic and Olive Oil
It's 175 cals for a can which is about 1 3/4 c.
Sun-dried tomatoes (6) - I used Mezzetta sun-ripened tomatoes in olive oil.
It's 30 cals/serving with is 3 tomatoes.
Reduced-fat Mozzarella cheese - I used Sargentos
It's 40 cals/2 tblsp

Instructions:
Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees.
Prepare pasta according to directions on the box.

Dice sun-dried tomatoes.
Mix sun-dried tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and tomato sauce. I added some "pasta sprinkle" which looks like it was basil, garlic, turkish oregano and thyme.
Heat it together in a saucepan.

I used an 8 x 8 pan for baking, but I was only making 2 serving.

Add pasta to a pan for baking.
Add 1/2 c. of pasta sauce for each serving.
Mix together.
Top with 2 tbsp of Mozzarella per serving.
Bake for 20 minutes on the lower rack.
Serve. Enjoy.

Here's the break down of the calories:
It's about 56 cals/serving for the pasta sauce which made 6 servings for Jeff and I.
180 for the pasta and 40 for the mozzarella.

Total: 276 calories

I was actually surprised at how much food this dish actually provided. I worried that the 2 oz of pasta wouldn't be enough for my non-healthy lifestyle husband, but it ended up being more than enough. I have no idea how much 2 oz of pasta is, so I used a cheap food scale I bought at the grocery store for $3. That thing is so handy. I use it all the time.
